Bluefield holds off Mavericks
WHEELING — The ninth state football championship for the Bluefield Beavers was earned yard-by-yard Friday night against one of their toughest opponents of the 2007 campaign, the James Monroe Mavericks.
It took a shutdown defense and a second-half comeback effort from the talented Bluefield offense to rest a 20-12 win from their southern-border neighbors on the turf at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Michael Graham threw two touchdown passes and Takeem Hedgeman's third of three scores set a state record, as Monticello survived a valiant comeback attempt and defeated Richlands 36-22 in the Group AA, Division 3 state championship game on Saturday at Liberty University's Williams Stadium.

The Greenwave would have to wait another year before they could try and lay claim to their first state championship since 1978.  Nuckols was a monster, racking up 217 yards and a TD on 32 carries, and he led Buffalo Gap to a 28-19 win over Clintwood in the VHSL Group A, Division 1 state championship game on Saturday afternoon at Salem Stadium before an estimated crowd of 7,000.
